The spy who loved me

Jul. 2, 2010

The photo dominating the front pages this morning is that of alleged Russian spy Anna Kuschenko with her former husband Alex Chapman, a Bournemouth psychology student. Advised by MI5 not to speak to the press, Chapman had called up the nationals asking for what is rumoured to be £7,000. The Telegraph is believed to have paid up, however, the other papers gleaned enough out of Chapman, including his picture, for their own extensive coverage.

The story, believed to be a US cock-up by many in the press, is a fantastic read involving attractive Russian spies, American suburbia and now an unwitting British student ex-husband. Investigative journalists have been scouring their databases and Facebook for details of the "spies" and anyone involved with them. Results of this dominate the inside pages.

Otherwise, the Sun splashes with a gruesome photo of a British soldier shot in the face. The soldier did survive and according to the paper's front page, was "on patrol hours later". A catchy front page but unnecessary

The Independent wins it again though with a lead on scientists having discovered what makes us live longer. According to the paper, scientists have developed a test that is 77% accurate in determining whether someone is likely to live to 100.
