Treatment (Days 16-20)

Seeing my smaller wound healing this morning was the confirmation that the past twenty days have been worthwhile. Though the larger one (pictured left) has been healing nicely for the last couple of months, the fact that this appeared to have sped up wasn't really confirmation that the sodium stibogluconate had helped.
The second wound, however, had shown no signs of healing until the last week of treatment. This fact is the best evidence I am likely to get that I actually suffered from leishmaniasis as nothing was ever found from the biopsies, even when looked at by the country's top histopathologist. Therefore, a blood test or biopsy now would presumably give the same null result rendering it worthless as a test for an all-clear.
So it was a relief to be discharged and to have suffered none of the major side-effects of sodium stibogluconate. The wounds look like they will have disappeared, at least to be replaced by scars, in the next few weeks. I will continue to post photos and write about what will hopefully be my final consultation on September 14th 2009.
